Description

Ade enjoys living at the top of a tower block, where he can see the world below. His life, however, is far from ordinary. While he relishes the view and the comfort of their high vantage point, his mother is increasingly confined to their home, consumed by her fear of the dangers lurking outside.

The Plot

When strange, aggressive plants begin to invade their surroundings, the safety of their haven is put to the test. Tower blocks nearby start collapsing one by one, plunging Ade and his mother into chaos. As they grapple with their isolation, Ade's curiosity and bravery are ignited, pushing him to confront the unknown. The narrative weaves a gripping tale of survival and the unbreakable bond between mother and son in the face of overwhelming adversity.

Themes

Boy In The Tower explores profound themes such as:

  • Fear and Resilience: The impact of fear on individuals and families and the strength found in facing it.
  • Mother-Son Relationship: The complexities of love, protection, and trust within a parent-child dynamic.
  • Isolation and Courage: The struggle against external threats and the courage to seek connection amidst chaos.
"A haunting yet hopeful tale of survival." - Literary Review

Polly Ho-Yen's writing style is both lyrical and engaging, drawing readers into a vividly depicted world where imagination meets reality. Fans of dystopian fiction and those who enjoyed titles like The Last Wild by Piers Torday or The Girl Who Drank the Moon by Kelly Barnhill will find much to appreciate in this compelling narrative.
